Each spring, UNCG celebrates student research by hosting both a graduate and an undergraduate research expo highlighting UNCG students’ cutting edge research.

This year’s Carolyn and Norwood Thomas Undergraduate Research and Creativity Expo was March 29, and included a presentation from Jennifer Blackmer, 2015 winner of the PEN/Laura Pels International Foundation for Theatre Award for Emerging American Playwright.

Students could enter research into four different categories: Health and Behavioral Sciences; Humanities, Education and Social Sciences; Sciences and Visual Arts.

The first place winners for those categories are:

  • Health and Behavioral Sciences: Rose Ewald and Sarah Howle,“Hypertension and Obesity in Low-Income, Immigrant, and Minority Adolescents.” Their faculty mentor was Dr. Lauren Haldeman, nutrition.
  • Humanities, Education and Social Sciences: Elizabeth Wilson, “Postbellum Agrarian Life: The Archaeology of Family, Self-reliance, and Thrift.” Her faculty mentor was Dr. Linda Stine, historical archaeology.
  • Sciences: Nadjali Chung, “Glycerol as an Extraction Solvent for Botanical Extracts of Goldenseal (Hydrastis Canadensis).” Her faculty mentor was Dr. Nadja Cech, analytical chemistry.
  • Visual Arts: Quinn Hunter, “My Inheritance.” Her faculty mentors were Nikki Blair and Amy Purcell, art.

Other winners include: Fizah Zafar, Phillip Sheldon, Alaina Monts, Shannon Kelly, Zoe Fishman, Marissa Sarver, Louis Sulit, Eni Minerali and Jennifer Wilent, Osbin Perdomo and Sunbing Deng, Margaret Bailey, Isaac Smith and Sarah Kim.

The 2016 Graduate Research and Creativity Expo was held April 7. Former President of the Weaver Foundation and former Vice Chancellor for University Advancement at UNCG Richard “Skip” Moore delivered the opening remarks.

Students entered research into six different categories: Creative Arts; Health Sciences; Humanities; Natural, Physical and Mathematical Sciences; Professional Programs and Social Sciences.

The categorical winners for the 2016 Graduate Research and Creativity Expo are:

  • Creative Arts: Sydney de Briel, “Costume Design: She Kills Monsters.” Her faculty mentor was Deborah Bell, theatre.
  • Health Sciences: Andrea Pluskota, “Black Lives, Literacy, and Language Skills Matter: A Summer Program for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse School-Aged Children.” Her faculty mentor was Dr. Alan Kamhi, communication science and disorders.
  • Humanities: Joseph Ross, “Remembering Nuremberg: The Paradox of Human Rights in American History.” His faculty mentor was Dr. Mark E. Elliott, history.
  • Natural, Physical and Mathematical Sciences: Taylor Mabe, “Development and Fabrication of a Handheld Point-of-Care Sensor for Disease Diagnosis.” His faculty mentor was Dr. Jianjun Wei, nanoscience and nanoengineering.
  • Professional Programs: Tara Konya, “At the Intersection of Social Marketing and Public Policy: An Exploration of a Non-Profit from the Client Perspective.”Her faculty mentor was Dr. Nancy Nelson Hodges, consumer, apparel, and retail studies.
  • Social Sciences: Arwa Altaher, “Residential Location Patterns of Immigrants in 21st Century: A Case Study of Atlanta MSA.” Her faculty mentor was Dr. Selima Sultana, geography.

The winners from the Graduate Research and Creativity Expo received a $1,000 prize, and will be recognized at the Student Honors Convocation on April 27. Several winners will also be invited to participate in the State Legislature’s Graduate Education Day in Raleigh in May.
