Dr. Mark Smith-Soto, a professor of Spanish at UNCG and editor of the“International Poetry Review,” has won the 2012 James Applewhite Poetry Prize for his poem “Last Retreat to Topsail Island.”

Applewhite presented the award recently at the Eastern North Carolina Literary Homecoming in Greenville. Smith-Soto’s award-winning work has been published in numerous literary magazines. “Last Retreat to Topsail Island” will appear in the 2013 issue of “North Carolina Literary Review.”

Applewhite called Smith-Soto’s poem “beautifully crafted, unselfconsciously eloquent.”

Dr. Timothy D. Johnston, dean of UNCG’s College of Arts and Sciences, said those who have read Mark Smith-Soto’s poetry for years will be pleased but not surprised by this recognition of his work.

“He’s a distinguished member of the College faculty whose literary and poetic gifts greatly enrich the educational experience of our students at UNCG.”
