Dr. Jill Bender, an Associate Professor in the Department of History, will spend the 2025-2026 academic year as a Visiting Associate Professor at the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Callista Mansell, an Academic Professional Assistant Professor in the Department of Interior Architecture, and Travis Hicks, Professor and Department Head, have been awarded a three-year contract from the NC Department of Commerce.

UNCG biochemistry student Janae Wofford has been awarded the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship for her innovative research into combating antibiotic-resistant “superbugs” by exploring natural compounds from trees. Guided by Dr. Nadja Cech, Wofford’s work focuses on identifying antimicrobial agents from the American Beech tree, aiming to develop new medicines to treat increasingly dangerous infections.

Janae Wofford sought a chance to join a lab as soon as possible. Going into her senior year, she will dig deeper into a tree she found in the nearby woods, which may provide answers to deadly “superbugs.”
