SUMMARY:GROWTH LUNCH ‘N’ LEARN – JACLYN MAHER PhD
DESCRIPTION:FEATURING:\nJACLYN MAHER\, PHD\nDEPARTMENT OF KINESIOLOGY \nPhysical Activity Adoption and Maintenance in Older Adults \n\nAdults over age 60 represent the fastest growing\, least active\, and most sedentary segment of the population. Yet interventions designed to improve movement-related behaviors in older adults typically only have modest effects with behavior regressing back to baseline levels after the intervention concludes. This limited effectiveness of interventions may be in part that health behavior theories do not differentiate between the motivational processes that drive health behavior adoption vs maintenance. Dr. Maher’s presentation will describe preliminary results from a longitudinal study integrating real-time data from smartphone-based questionnaires and activity monitors to study the differential motivational processes regulating physical activity adoption and maintenance among older adults.
