SUMMARY:Future of the Hybrid Synagogue
DESCRIPTION:Considering the Challenges and Opportunities Created by Technology for Jewish Congregations in a Post-Pandemic Era\nJoin the UNCG Religious Studies Department and Jewish Studies Program for the Annual Henry Samuel Levinson Lecture! This event will take place both in-person and on Zoom. \nAbout the lecture: Since 2020\, Jewish congregations in the USA have had to adapt to changes caused by Covid-19. While 2023 has largely marked a return to pre-pandemic practices\, being forced to engage with technology for synagogue services and holy days led to unexpected innovations in Jewish faith communities. This lecture provides an overview of how American religious congregations in general\, and Jewish communities specifically\, adopted and adapted digital media between 2020 and 2023. It draws on research about how congregations engage technologies and considers the long-term future implications they might have on Jewish community gathering. \nAbout Campbell: Heidi A. Campbell is Professor of Communication\, affiliate faculty in Religious Studies\, and a Presidential Impact Fellow at Texas A&M University. She is the author of over 100 articles and books\, and has been quoted in USA Today\, The Guardian\, The Wall Street Journal\, and BBC World Service. \nMonday\, October 30 at 7 pmIn person: UNCG Campus\, Alexander Room in the EUCOnline: At this Zoom Link.
