SUMMARY:Gaining New Minds: The Power of Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration with Alyse Knorr
DESCRIPTION:Both academia and industry prize specialization\, but what’s lost when our creative world becomes too narrow? In this talk\, Alyse Knorr explores the importance of interdisciplinary artistic collaboration and curiosity\, drawing on her own experiences working with composers\, painters\, and singers that have resulted in a Carnegie Hall premiere\, a public mural at the Harlem Public Library\, and re-creations of 2\,500-year-old archaic Greek songs. Ultimately\, learning from the ways others approach material and method makes any artist become more inventive in their own craft\, more confident in their own practice\, and more holistic in their thinking. \n\n\n\nAlyse Knorr is an associate professor of English at Regis University and co-editor of Switchback Books. She is the author of the poetry collections Wolf Tours (2024); Ardor (2023)\, a Lambda Literary Award finalist; Mega-City Redux (2017); Copper Mother (2016); and Annotated Glass (2013). She also authored the video game history books GoldenEye (2022) and Super Mario Bros. 3 (2016) and four poetry chapbooks. Her work has appeared in The New Republic\, POETRY Magazine\, Alaska Quarterly Review\, Denver Quarterly\, and The Georgia Review\, among others. She received her MFA from George Mason University. \n\n\n\nThis event is hosted by UNCG’s Humanities Network and Consortium (HNAC).

SUMMARY:Humanities @ Work Internship information sessions
DESCRIPTION:As a reminder\, the program is a year-long\, paid internship placement with one of 11 local organizations—community partners who are currently hard at work refining exciting student projects. These organizations include museums\, family-and youth-focused nonprofits\, agencies intervening into issues related to poverty in Greensboro\, organizations engaging directly with immigrants and refugees in the Triad\, and those focused on environment and sustainability. The H@W experience also involves students taking HUM 304 (T/Th 12:30-1:45 pm) and HUM 304L (F 2-3:15) in the fall and a 305-sequence in the spring. Together\, the experience enables students to have hands-on\, paid\, and credit-earning work in the community as they reflect and draw insights from these experiences and their humanities education\, all with an eye toward building pathways toward meaningful careers. \n\n\n\nOur team welcomes students to come to one of our student information sessions: today\, Mon 3/18 from 2-2:30 pm in MHRA 1209 or tomorrow\, Wed 3/19 from 1-1:30 in Curry 231. Here students will learn more about the details of the program\, student experiences from our current pilot experience\, and instructions on applying. Please also note that advising information has been sent to all departments and programs with eligible majors/concentrations. \n\n\n\nThe H@W experience is open to eligible students (based on major) who are looking for a meaningful opportunity and who are open to a fun and thought-provoking experience. No minimum GPA required. We invite you to encourage you students to learn more about the program and apply—we know that no recruitment is as successful as word-of-mouth endorsement. \n\n\n\nQuestions can be directed to haw@uncg.edu. \n\n\n\nThank you for your support as we engage communities and build careers!

SUMMARY:Knowledge Production Corner - Listen Well: Restorative Practices for Community Engagement
DESCRIPTION:What does it take to create the conditions in which listening can occur?  What is necessary to do so well – especially in the context of challenging times in our organizations\, communities\, and world? What do skilled listeners do so that others speak and share with them\, particularly when relationships need repair? \nThis session is for those who serve in leadership roles\, formally and informally\, at UNCG or in their communities. Using techniques based in Dr. Janke’s recent research\, we will work together to identify strategies to better connect and understand the people we most need to engage — and understand what is getting in the way. SUMMARY:Sciline's Understanding the media for scientists webinar
DESCRIPTION:SciLine\, based at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)\, would like to encourage scientific experts\, who are interested in sharing their knowledge and expertise with the media\, to register themselves with our database of experts. Once you are in our database\, we may get in touch about sharing your expertise with the media. \n\n\n\nThis free\, one-hour course—designed specifically for media-curious scientists with little or no media experience—teaches the basics scientists need to know as they consider dipping their toes or diving deeper into media engagement. We provide an overview of the U.S. news landscape\, including the different types of media outlets and reporters a scientist might encounter (and what each is looking for)\, professional similarities and differences between journalists and scientists\, and the risks and benefits of participating in interviews. \n\n\n\nThe course is led by Ph.D. neuroscientist Tori Espensen\, with participation by freelance science journalist Elena Renken (NPR\, Quanta Magazine\, PBS “NOVA”). Attendees will learn what makes a science story newsworthy\, how to become more “findable” by journalists\, and key concepts and etiquette norms to know when speaking to a reporter. Register today!
