SUMMARY:"Offerings to the island body and water memory"
DESCRIPTION:“Offerings to the island body and water memory” \nWednesday\, April 10th 5:30 – 7:00pm.This event is open to the public. Location update coming soon.\nIn this ritual-performance\, Mauritian-Canadian poet and performer Kama La Mackerel (they/them) invokes water memories: this fluidity that lives in us\, that is present around us\, that transforms and reshapes itself but never disappears. Water\, in all its forms\, in all of its courses\, in all of its bodies\, carries history: ecological\, geological\, mineral\, ancestral tellings. \nThrough ritual\, performance\, movement\, multilingual poetry and voice\, Kama La Mackerel opens up a space where their birth-island\, Mauritius\, is in conversation with Gaspésie territories\, where the Indian Ocean flows into the Saint Lawrence. Through this offering\, the artist invites us to rethink our relationship to spirituality\, ecology\, history and our own bodies. \n*Undergraduate and graduate students are also invited to a closed session on Thursday\, Apr 11\, from 11:00 – 12:30p with Kama La Mackerel to discuss their poetry collection\, Zom Fam\, and converse about their practice as a poet\, performer\, translator\, and curator. Lunch will be provided. Interested students should email Dr. Neelofer Qadir at n_qadir@uncg.edu to add their name to the participants list.

SUMMARY:Sheryl Oring's I Wish to Say National Tour
DESCRIPTION:September 17\, 3-4pm at Taylor Garden Fountain (near EUC) \nTwenty years ago\, artist Sheryl Oring embarked on a mission with a simple yet profound tool: a manual typewriter. Her project\, I Wish to Say\, invited people to express their thoughts directly to the U.S. president. Oring\, dressed as a 1960s secretary\, created a public office where she typed participants’ messages verbatim onto postcards. Each original was sent to the White House\, while a carbon copy was preserved for her archive. \nTo date\, Oring has typed 4\,314 postcards across hundreds of locations in the United States\, from parks and town squares to college campuses and festivals. This fall she is visiting university campuses\, parks\, and libraries across the country to encourage civic participation in this critical election. Oring\, formerly a professor in the UNCG School of Art\, will be on the UNCG campus during Hispanic Heritage Month. Join her in this powerful act of civic engagement\, and make your voice heard!

SUMMARY:Home Front Battles: World War II Mobilization and Race in Deep South
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, September 18th at 3pm in Hodges Reading Room (Jackson Library) for a presentation by Dr. Charles C. Bolton\, historian\, professor\, and author of the recently published Home Front Battles: World War II Mobilization and Race in the Deep South (Oxford University Press). Bolton’s book explores the role of race in World War II mobilization in the Deep South\, where the needs of wartime industries and bases inflamed tensions around labor\, land\, and military service. To accompany Bolton’s presentation\, an exhibit of materials from the Martha Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and University Archives will display posters\, printed materials\, and other documents related to World War II\, race\, and military service. \nThe Martha Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro collects\, preserves\, and makes accessible unique and historical materials for learning and research. The department promotes the use of these materials by the University’s academic community\, scholars\, and the public. Its goal is to advance scholarship and to further the educational and service missions of the University. \nPlease contact us at scua@uncg.edu to request disability accommodations.

SUMMARY:Be Here Club Meeting - 9/19/2024
DESCRIPTION:The Be Here Club (BHC) is an informal monthly social/networking gathering intended to make the larger UNCG community a little smaller. Academic professionals\, including faculty\, administrators\, and staff\, often operate in insulated channels with diverse responsibilities\, therefore making communal socialization\, integration\, and partnerships challenging. BHC is also a forum to encourage engagement with community members and partners from outside of UNCG to add to the aesthetic of Greensboro and create real opportunities for societal improvement on a local level. Above all else\, the BHC is simply a place to find\, and build\, camaraderie and comfort for those who call UNCG and Greensboro home.
