UNCG Research congratulates Dr. Dianne Welsh on her two grants from the Coleman Foundation, totaling $58,000. The Hayes Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship received $40,000 for the “Spartan Trader Retail Learning Lab” project and $18,000 for the “Coleman Entrepreneurship Academic Fellows” project.

The Spartan Trader Retail Learning Lab on the bottom floor of the Spring Garden Apartments residence hall gives students a hands-on opportunity to learn all aspects of running a retail store. Students sell on consignment original crafts and art objects made by faculty, students, and staff. Welsh’s Coleman Foundation funding covers the part-time store manager salaries; graduate assistantships; marketing and advertising funds; and student project funds.

Many instructors conduct classes onsite at Spartan Trader or use the store for class projects. The Coleman Entrepreneurship Academic Fellows, funded by Welsh’s other Coleman Foundation grant, are among those who utilize the retail learning lab.

2012-2013 Fellows Sheryl Oring, Christopher Thomas, and Duane Cyrus will incorporate the Spartan Trader as they develop cross-disciplinary entrepreneurship courses in the Department of Art and the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance. The new Coleman Foundation funding also provides continuation grants for work by 2011-2012 Coleman Entrepreneurship Faculty Fellows, Justin Streuli, Bonnie Canziani, and Jennifer Yurchisin.

Established in 1951, the nonprofit Coleman Foundation distributes grants related to entrepreneurship education; cancer care, treatment, and support; and developmental disability services. Dr. Welsh, director of UNCG’s Entrepreneurship Cross-Disciplinary Program, has directed $97,558 in grants from the Coleman Foundation over the last three years.
