Julie Voorhees, a proposal development specialist in the Office of Sponsored Programs, recently became a CRA, or Certified Research Administrator.

The Research Administrators Certification Council offers this designation to those demonstrating expertise in the field. Julie is one of only two CRAs on campus. Rebecca Libera, Assistant Director of Sponsored Programs, is the other.

As a proposal development specialist, Voorhees connects UNCG researchers with funding opportunities and provides leadership and administrative support in the development of major and complex grant applications.

To become a CRA, candidates must have significant experience and demonstrate knowledge of all aspects of research administration. An intensive exam is part of the process.

“The CRA exam tested my level of understanding across a broad body of knowledge that spans the entire grant lifecycle including project development and administration, legal requirements and sponsor interface, and financial and general management,” Voorhees says.

“Developing my knowledge base across these domains ensures that I am capable of providing excellent service to the clients – including faculty, staff, and administrators – that I serve. It’s a point of personal pride and professional commitment.”
