UNCG Research congratulates Dr. Jay Poole on his funding from the Annie Penn Hospital. The $31,075 award supports the “Congregational Social Work Education Initiative Expansion into Rockingham County.”

Through the Congregational Social Work Education Initiative (CSWEI), students from NC A&T and UNCG provide social work services to area congregants. CSWEI members work in tandem with members of the Cone Health Congregational Nurse Program (CNP), a specialized practice based on a collaborative relationship between Cone Health and local faith communities.

Together, CSWEI social work interns and CNP nurses provide free health and mental health/wellness services to designated churches and other faith-based institutions. These institutions, which have historically promoted healing and caregiving, serve as powerful conduits to the community.

Dr. Poole’s project  through the Annie Penn Hospital expands CSWEI and CNP partnership work into Rockingham County. The Rockingham project will target Hispanic and homeless residents in the area. Project personnel will work to connect these individuals to existing primary medical homes. The project creates pathways that vulnerable populations of the rural county can use to access affordable medical care.
