Research Storage FAQ
The OWNER of the folder is an account with the name in the following style: “RESEARCH – Username – Research Title”. To request a Research tagged folder visit: go.uncg.edu/boxsignup.
Several options were considered to house UNCG’s Research data. Box.com was selected primarily due to feedback from researchers, Box.com’s robust security and flexible collaboration features.
Box.com is the primary storage platform for Research data at UNCG. Therefore we strongly recommend keeping your data there if possible. However, we understand that every Research project is different and has unique needs. If your Research project has a strong case for being stored in another UNCG approved storage platform that is also allowed.
Any funded or unfunded research project at UNCG is entitled to use Box.com to store data. This includes faculty, staff and student research.
Storage for all projects will be unlimited.
Most Research data currently in Box has a “Tag” on it identifying the folder as Research. This naming convention will continue to be used. Research tagged folders will be owned by a central user with the same name as the Research project itself. Research data owners will be given the “Co-Owner” role and can share the data with anyone needed on the Research team. Folder structure within the main project folder can be changed as needed by Researchers.
Yes, unless you have a strong reason to remain in a different platform you should move your data to box. If you have a large or difficult to move dataset, please reach out to 6tech@uncg.edu for assistance.
Yes, Box is typically still the best place to store your data since it has a very strong compliance posture. Additionally, UNCG ITS can set custom security rules around Research Data with high security and compliance needs. If your data has security requirements that can not be met by Box.com please contact 6tech@uncg.edu for more assistance.
At the end of our Box contract we will re-evaluate the best place for Research data at UNCG. That may mean continued use of Box or moving to a different platform.
