On June 7, 2016, WUNC covered “The Fabric of Memory: The Cone Mill Villages of Greensboro,” an exhibit created by UNCG graduate students in the museum studies program. The students collected over 50 oral histories from former mill villagers, exploring textile industry impacts on Greensboro.
Cone Mills Inc. built several textile factories in the Greensboro area during the early 1900s. These factories prompted the rise of mill villages – cohesive communities including schools, churches, and stores.
The exhibit is permanently on view at Revolution Mill, a 45-acre textile campus north of downtown Greensboro. The project, produced in collaboration with Design Dimension of Raleigh, was created through the support of The Cemala Foundation, Weaver Foundation, and Tannenbaum-Sternberger Foundation.
Frank Stasio discussed the exhibit with Professor Benjamin Filene and Crystal Kulhanek of UNCG, as well as Judith Sams, a former mill villager.
