UNCG students Taylor Mabe and Jenna Schad have been named winners of the National Nanotechnology Initiative’s “Nano Film” video contest.
Mabe, a nanoscience PhD candidate, and Schad, a senior majoring in biology and media studies, teamed up to produce a video about Mabe’s dissertation research, which focuses on making portable biosensors for disease diagnostics.
Currently, this type of diagnostic testing is conducted by large, expensive instruments. Small, portable sensors would reduce testing costs, generate less waste and produce immediate results.
“We dream for this sensor to do for patients what the glucose meter did for the diabetic, and that’s change lives,” Mabe said in the video.
Nano Film is a project of the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) with support from the National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO). Videos submitted by students from universities across the United States and U.S. territories were posted on NanoTube, the official NNI YouTube channel, for public voting. Once the three videos with the most votes were identified, the winning video was chosen by representatives of NNI member agencies. Mabe and Schad’s video will be featured on Nano.gov for the next month.
