JoVE, an online platform that aims to make research and learning in the STEM fields more accessible by creating videos of peer-reviewed experiments, celebrated their 10th anniversary by hosting an international Film Your Research Contest for early-career scientists. Taylor Mabe, a PhD student at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, and undergraduate Jenna Schad produced a video together that won the popular vote.
The contest called for 2-minute self-produced videos that could tell a general audience about a specific lab or field experiment, its importance to the researcher’s area of study, and potential societal benefits of the research. Over 100 entries were filmed in labs from over 30 countries.
The winning video showcased Mabe’s work on a device that could make disease testing easier, cheaper, and more accessible in remote locations.
