Featured Image for UNCG seeks student teams for social entrepreneurship competition

Repost from UNCG Now

Article by Betsi Robinson

The North Carolina Entrepreneurship Center at UNCG is seeking undergraduate and graduate student teams to compete in the 2014 UNC Social Entrepreneurship Conference in February.

The annual conference provides an opportunity for students at UNC campuses to learn from engaging speakers about topics relevant to social entrepreneurship and present their ideas for innovative, sustainable, business-oriented solutions to problems in communities across our state.

Last year’s conference brought more than 500 participants together at N.C. A&T to learn from Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus and hear social enterprise proposals from student teams representing all 17 UNC campuses.

The 2014 conference will again include business plan competitions for undergraduate and graduate teams with cash prizes awarded to the top three teams in each category. UNCG will submit up to two undergraduate teams and two graduate teams to compete and present at the conference to be held at N.C. A&T in late February, 2014.

Graduate student teams will be asked to work with a nonprofit in North Carolina on a project the organization has identified to either develop a business plan for a new product or service or to help the nonprofit create a new revenue-generating product or service that supports its core mission. The deadline to apply to participate in the competition is Sept. 9.

Undergraduate student teams will be asked to create a maximum three-page business plan for a sustainable new venture that achieves a social objective important to North Carolina, such as providing healthcare or financial services for the poor. The deadline for submissions is Nov. 8.

More details on both competitions can be found here. Contact Bryan Toney at bctoney@uncg.edu or 336-256-8647 for more information.
