Dr. Robert Anemone, head of UNCG’s Department of Anthropology, and Anemone’s student Ashley Bryant spoke with North Carolina Science Now’s Frank Graff about their fossil dig this summer in the Wyoming badlands. Anemone and his team have uncovered caches of Eocene-era fossil mammals in the Great Divide Basin, which spans over 10,000 square kilometers. They are pioneering the use of GPS technology, including a small drone, to pinpoint specific dig sites most likely to yield fossils based on geographic features. So far, their fresh approach to fossil hunting is serving them well, making their search much more efficient.
