Featured Image for VC update: shifting roles at ORED

From the desk of the Terri L. Shelton, Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development

The primary responsibility for coordinating and facilitating proposed and existing relationships with corporations and foundations currently rests with the Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED). As a result of the appointment of Julia Jackson-Newsom as Senior Advisor to the Chancellor, there are some changes in responsibilities related to these functions.

I will now serve as the UNCG point of contact with foundations. Bryan Toney, the Associate Vice Chancellor for Economic Engagement, will continue as the UNCG point of contact with corporations. AVC Toney and I will work together to track the portfolio of proposed and active initiatives that involve corporate and foundation funding, will typically serve as the single point of contact for organizations that request one, and will routinely interact with corporate and foundation representatives to stay abreast of their interests. In addition, we will work closely with the Office of Advancement and with major gift officers to coordinate common interests and relationships across campus.

The other change relates to Conflict of Interest and Export Controls. Dr. Lisa Goble, formerly the Licensing and Research Policy Officer within the Office of Innovation Commercialization, is now the Export Control and Conflict of Interest Official for UNCG. Her new responsibilities include developing and overseeing the University’s Export Control Program, providing consultation to faculty, staff and administration on decisions that have import/export impact, and serving as the single point of contact for UNCG export control matters. In addition, she will assume the conflict of interest duties previously held by Dr. Newsom-Jackson. In that role, Dr. Goble will chair the conflict of interest committee and review policies and procedures related to the identification and disclosure of significant financial interests, potential conflicts of interest, and commitments.
