On September 16, 2015, ABC 11 reported on the expansion of the Fayetteville Police Department’s “Educating Kids about Gun Violence” (EKG) program. Officers and educators from Virginia met with the FPD to learn the means and methods of preventing gun violence. As part of this program, UNCG researchers Dr. Stacey Sechrist and Dr. John Weil have polled nearly 5,000 students from the 7th and 9th grade on their experiences with guns.

“Out of the nearly 5,000 7th and 9th grade Cumberland County students polled this year, more than 45 percent reported a close family member of [sic] friend who had been shot.”

Over the next year, Sechrist and Weil, who head up the NC Network for Safe Communities, hope to use their findings to assist the FPD with effectively gun violence prevention.
