Explorers at UNCG

The Explorers program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) is an immersive STEM outreach initiative designed to engage high school students through critical thinking, hands-on learning, and real-world problem-solving. Each summer, students explore the vast connections between STEM, the economy, community, and sustainability. Through interactive experiences such as wet labs, 3D printing, sensor development, and industry engagement, participants develop innovative solutions that impact their future and spark their interest in STEM careers. Additionally, students go on field trips to explore different areas of scientific impact, such as visiting university research labs, local farms,  the bee pollinator centers at UNCG, local museums and much more that provides them with firsthand experience in how science shapes the world around them.

Supporting STEM Growth in the Triad and Beyond

Explorers at UNCG is committed to fostering a strong STEM pipeline in the Triad region by keeping students engaged in research and scientific exploration. By providing hands-on learning experiences and meaningful industry connections, we aim to inspire the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers. Our program not only nurtures a passion for STEM but also contributes to the larger North Carolina economy by preparing students for careers in high-demand fields. Through education, mentorship, and real-world applications, Explorers supports the development of a skilled workforce that will drive future scientific advancements and economic growth.

Problem Based Learning

Through problem-based learning (PBL), students engage in real-world STEM scenarios that challenge them to apply critical thinking, research, and laboratory skills. These hands-on experiences foster collaboration, innovation, and a deeper understanding of scientific concepts.

Making Meaningful connections

We bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications by connecting students to diverse STEM fields, including nanotechnology, electronics, agriculture, and sustainability. Explorers visit local farms and interact with industry professionals and stakeholders who directly impact the environment. Through discussions and hands-on activities, students explore the critical role of STEM in industries, government, and communities.

Preparing for the future

To support long-term growth in STEM, Explorers build lasting connections with universities and refine their skills as emerging researchers. They gain experience presenting their work through conferences, poster sessions, and oral presentations, boosting their confidence and self-efficacy as future STEM leaders.

STEPS Explorers

In partnership with the Science and Technology Center STEPS, the STEPS Explorers program focuses on phosphorus (P) sustainability while keeping students engaged in STEM fields. Through this collaboration, students learn about the role of phosphorus in agriculture and the environment, how sensors can be used for sustainable solutions, and the broader impact of STEM research on society. Draelos Explorers

In collaboration with the Draelos Science Scholars program, Draelos Explorers provides high school students with the opportunity to engage in scientific research alongside faculty and industry professionals. This program introduces students to advanced STEM topics and fosters a passion for scientific discovery through research-based learning and mentorship.

Want to Participate?

Explorers at UNCG provides multiple opportunities for students to engage in STEM through hands-on summer camps and immersive learning experiences. These programs allow students to participate in real-world scientific applications, work with professionals, and gain valuable STEM exposure.

Summer 2025 Program

For Summer 2025, we are excited to offer a two-week collaborative experience with UNCG, NC A&T, STEPS, and Draelos Science Scholars. This immersive experience provides students with an explorative approach to STEM through different scientific disciplines.

Week 1: Draelos Future Science Program (July 14 – 18)

The Draelos Future Science Program is designed to give passionate students an opportunity to work alongside real scientists and gain upper-level laboratory skills! Throughout the week, participants will:

🔬 Investigate the world of synthetic biology, including how synthetic biology contributes to various aspects of daily life.
🧬 Practice essential lab techniques like microscopy, pipetting, and cell culture, building foundational research skills.
🦠 Analyze viral structures, compare RNA vs. DNA, and explore how scientists designed biological systems for the COVID-19 response.
🛠️ Engage in a problem-based learning challenge to simulate real-world scientific problem-solving.
💡 Develop professional skills to prepare for future STEM opportunities.
🚀 Participate in a mystery-style lab challenge to analyze data, communicate findings, and work as a team to diagnose mock COVID-19 samples.

Week 2: Agriculture & STEM Convergence Experience (July 21 – 25)

The second week focuses on the connection between agriculture and STEM. Students will engage in a convergence science experience that integrates science policy, environmental and economic impact, and problem-based learning. Throughout the week, participants will:

🌱 Gain hands-on laboratory experience in agricultural and environmental science.
🖨️ Develop 3D printing skills and apply them to scientific applications.
🐝 Visit a pollinator bee center to explore the role of pollinators in agriculture.
🏫 Attend a college tour and engage with faculty and industry experts.
💼 Work in collaborative teams to create pitches addressing real-world STEM challenges.

Questions You May Have…

Is this science experience free?

Yes, each Explorers program is free of charge.

Can my child participate in both weeks?

Yes, you can choose to participate in a single week or both. Details are provided on the farm to indicate what you prefer.

Will there be an informational session?
