Featured Image for Research awards climb to $52M, highest in UNCG history

Supporting homeless youth, and those in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems. Mobile nursing units to reach rural and underserved communities. Assisting children and families struggling with the impacts of racism. Healthier honey bees.

These are just a few of the projects and goals supported by UNCG’s largest new research awards.

UNCG researchers broke records this year, with award funding climbing to the highest level in the university’s history: $51,960,000.

“Our rising funding numbers reflect the strength and tenacity of UNCG’s teacher-scholars,” said Chancellor Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr.

“And this year’s largest awards reflect our University’s values and aspirations – partnerships to improve health and prosperity in North Carolina, interventions to improve the well-being of at-risk populations across the nation, and STEM research and education.”

Both the number and the average amount of awards increased in fiscal year 2022, as did the total dollars requested through proposal submissions. Research expenditures were also the highest in UNCG history, rising 19% in the last year.

“This is the tenth consecutive year awards have risen at the University,” said Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement Terri L. Shelton.

“We saw a $3.6M or 7% increase this year, and a 42% increase over the last 5 years. The numbers speak to the productivity and passion of UNCG’s scholars.”
