Faculty Artist Profile: Marielis Garcia

Marielis Garcia

Assistant Professor of Dance Marielis Garcia has been a teaching artist since she was barely a teenager—a gutsy teenager who knew exactly what she wanted and wasn’t afraid to ask for it. Marielis could not afford dance classes so she asked for work study and started her career acting as an assistant with the younger students.

Smart-Tillman Artist-in-Residence and Musical Theatre Coordinator Dominick Amendum has been Wicked busy. Amendum, who is an alumnus of UNCG’s School of Music spent a year in London acting as the Production Music Supervisor for the Wicked film.


Student Led Event Creates Unity in Diversity

According to Merriam-Webster, unity is “the state of being one; oneness,” while diversity refers to “variety, assortment or mixture.” Jamaas Britton (’24 MFA Drama) thinks there can, and should, be both. So, he created “Unity in Diversity,” an event for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) to showcase their talents.


The Making of a Web Series: I ❤️ Collaboration

I❤️Collaboration, a thirteen-part web series developed by students and faculty in the School of Theatre, School of Music, and Department of Media Studies can be seen as a training ground, a recruiting tool, and now, as a contender in a comedy film festival.


Pioneers in Pilates: School of Dance Launches Certificate Program

Mila Parrish walks around the studio speaking in a calm almost melodic tone, guiding her students through a Pilates flow, stopping from time to time to adjust a leg or arm to help the dancers achieve the proper positions. The students are pioneers in Pilates at UNCG’s School of Dance—the first cohort that will earn a certification to teach the exercise form.
